Why choose us

Sallies Silica’s operations consist of a crystalline silica or quartzite opencast mine, a two-stage crushing facility, dry and wet screening followed by a drying and grading process. The mine, which is based between Brits and Hartebeespoort dam, has been in operation since 1977.

Quality control is implemented throughout the manufacturing process, ensuring consistency of grading, moisture and chemistry. Sallies Silica forms part of a larger Industrial Minerals Group, which mines, manufactures and distributes industrial minerals across the SADC region. The Group provides the economy of scale to ensure that Sallies Silica can deliver its products at the most competitive rates, even to the far-most corners of the region.

History

The mine started its first operations on Zandfontein Farm in 1977, and supplied basic materials to the local construction industry. Over the last four decades, the operations have developed to include a three -stage processing facility capable of producing a diverse product range.

The mine is located in the foothills of the Magaliesberg. The mineral deposit consists of a major quartzite formation, which is 160m wide, 600m long and is mined down to 30m deep. The estimated remaining life of the mine is 25 to 35 years.

Since it opened, the mine has traded under numerous names e.g. Eggo Sand in the 1980s and 1990s, Rolfes Silica from 2005, and most recently as Sallies Silica. Throughout this period the mine has partnered with precious metals producers in the region and has been synonymous with high quality products, boasting with a loyal client base built up over a period of more than 30 years.
